Tiefling Sorceror, Noble, Deceased
Mordai comes from a noble family in Narfell. His family became wealthy by creating a merchant empire in Narfell, although it didn’t happen overnight. Mordai’s ancestors started with just a ship and some cargo and continued trading until they had an empire. They took advantage of the fact that traders didn’t want to go through the empire of Thesk because of the danger that the lands held. Mordai’s ancestors used their desperation to make their way in the world to find ways, using the kingdom of Narfell as a meeting point, to traverse Thesk for these other traders.
This left an impression on Mordai’s family for years to come. They continued and expanded the family’s trade empire with the idea that supposed danger was nothing to stop them from making their lives better. This ideal found its way down to Mordai, who after several generations found himself in a large family of merchants. This ideal spoke to Mordai, but in a different way. He wanted to do right by his family and his family line, but he didn’t want to go about it through the merchant empire.
Mordai was always close with an advisor of the family, Lirok. Lirok used his wisdom and knowledge of the realm to help the family in trade deals and at times as a diplomat when foreign powers used their influence to harangue Mordai’s family’s trade routes. One day, Mordai expressed to Lirok his desire to go above and beyond, outside the merchant empire for his family. Lirok knew of a powerful magic welder from one of his travels far away.
Lirok wasn’t sure if this magic welder was a wizard, a sorcerer, or what have you, but he knew he was unpredictable. At this point, it didn’t matter; Mordai’s mind was made up. He wanted to go to this magic welder and learn his secrets. Mordai was gone two days later. Lirok was afraid that he would end up executed for leading the noble son into a dangerous situation, so he said nothing to the family for days, hoping Mordai would return instead of seeking out this enigma in a far off land.
Mordai took one of his family’s small ships. The magic user was found in a remote section of Thesk, where no one dared go. When he got there, he told the ship to wait for him for a week. He departed to find the magic user. What he found was exactly what Lirok and his family came to fear. The wild magic user was a lich who was disguising himself as a normal human during his interactions with the public. When he found Mordai, he lured him in with the promises of power beyond imagination. What he received was far worse. The lich used Mordai to experiment on him.
The lich, Terminus, was hoping to transform Mordai into a being of magical equal to him. Terminus was hoping to use Mordai in an effort to control Telflamm, the capital of Thesk. The transformation was long and painful, one that Mordai remembers to this day. Everything was going as planned until there was an explosion. Terminus lost control of the transformation and his experiment was lost. Terminus thought he lost Mordai in the experiment and left him for dead. Terminus knew he needed to flee, hoping that Mordai’s family would never find out and seek wrath for this.
Mordai didn’t die, however. He came to after the experiment with raw magical power, but something wasn’t right. He realized that he had also gone insane due to the power used in the experiment. This also left his magic abilities wildly unpredictable. When Mordai wandered back to his family’s ship, he set it on fire, unable to control his abilities.
Mordai wandered away from the ship. He had no idea where to go and how to contain himself. He was too fearful to return home. He was afraid he would bring shame on his family or worse yet, unleash his terrible magical abilities and kill them. Mordai wanders around looking for magical fonts, weapons, or magic users, hoping one of them can set his mind, and his abilities, straight. He also seeks answers and vengeance from Terminus, who is no doubt, still wandering around the Forgotten Realms.
